                                               10 commands for RUN console

 




It’s impossible that you couldn’t start the RUN console. Have you ever asked yourself what is it’s utilily? Well, from here, you can access facilites much faster than classic way and much more professional. In Windows XP the RUN command was starting by clicking Start, while on Vista and 7 you could start the RUN console by writing “run” into the search box.



1. Launching Task Manager

The taslmgr.exe command launch Windows Task Manager – a window that shows information about the current running processes and system usage state. To see all the application about system resource:

Click StartRun (Windows XP); Start – write into the search box run and press Enter (Windows Vista). Type in “taskmgr.exe” and click OK.

This is Vista accessing Run.



2.Quick Defragmentation

Your PC will be kept in a fully functioning state by a constant maintenance program, especially the hard drive. For this, you you can use other external programs or the good old classic Windows Defrag. This is how you can access it fast and simple.

Start Run and write “defrag”. Windows Defrag window will come up, where you can go and defrag your drives.



3. What is msconfig?

Microsoft System, Configuration is a tool that can diagnose problems shown when running the operating system. To launch msconfig.exe in Windows XP:

a. Go to StartRun and type “msconfig” and click OK. In Vista or 7 type “msconfig” direcly in the search box and press Enter.

b. The System Configuration Utility window will come up (Windows XP) or System Configuration (Vista/7). The window contains 6 tabs in XP and only 5 in Vista/7 ( General, Boot, Services, Startup and Tools).

c. Click the Startup tab and you will see a list of programs that starts with Windows. Some are very important while others are just useless and use RAM memory.

d. Uncheck useless programs that start with your system, but be carefull only uncheck those that you know what they are so you won’t uncheck the antivirus or something orelse so you would crash your PC.







4. Launching Registry manager.

Microsoft Registry editor (regedit.exe) allows you to see, search and modify settings from your system registry that contains information which allows your operating system to operate( to run). You can use Registry Editor to check and modify registry but if you are not careful you will be forced to reinstall your Windows. So, maximum precaution if you are forced to use this editor to adjust some settings. You need to know that this is installed with your system and you can find it in your Windows Directory.

To start Registry Editor go to Run and type in “regedit” and click OK. The Registry contains the whole information about everything is in your PC: hardware, software, changes, license keys, and so on. As I said before you will need to be extremely careful when here so you won’t be forced to use a System Restore (if you have one).



5. Tehnical Data about your System.

If you want to find information about your system you can use DirectX Diagnostics (dxdiag.exe), which allows you to see al the important information about your system. To find them out:

a. go to Run

b. Type in “dxdiag” and click OK.

c. After the window have come up click Save All Information… to save the list with your System Configuration.





6. Information About Windows

While Windows is installing the system, some information is asked like organization name and your name. Information of this type are in System Properties, the General tab (Windows XP) and for Vista and 7 right click Computer and select Properties. In all the operating systems we can see exactly what version of Windows do we have by typing in the Run box “winver”. If you want to change information like OwnerName or OrganizationName you will need to go to Run and write “regedit” to open Registry Editor. Then press at the same time Ctrl (Control) + F and the Find window will come up. There write down RegisteredOwner and press Enter. After the search is done you will see a window like this:





There change the name of the PC’s owner and Click RegisteredOriganization to change the Organization name that is registered by the Windows.






7. Access all Windows Files with a single command.

Microsoft has some hidden commands that sometimes are extremely useful in getting things done in a single window.

a. Start Run and write “fsmgmt.msc” and click OK.

b. As you can see, a single window keep all the files. This tool is integrated in Windows XP, Vista and 7.







8. Replacing corrupt Windows files.

The principal cause for destroying and modifying a system file is viruses, and the best thing you can do about it is formatting or reinstalling the operating system. A much faster and safer way is just replacing the corrupt files with the original ones by typing in the Run box “sfc.exe” (System File Checker). We need an optical drive with the ability of reading cd’s and the Windows XP installation disk. Insert the CD into your optical drive. Then go to StartRun and write there “sfc /scannow”. The corrupt files will be replaced with the original ones from the disk.





9. Test if a website is functional.

For this command we will go to Run and type “cmd”. Then:

a. type in ping, along with the website link ( for example www.yahoovanuglysocks.com is a fictional one)

b. type in ping www……. (leave a space between those two words). The website was tested 4 times and it doesn’t work so the website is not responding. If a time out or another error shows up that means that the website is not responding for the momentyou’re your internet connection is not active.

c. If you want to track a server or your internet connection type in ping www.yahoovanuglysocks.com –t. You will notice a change when the website or your internet connection is running again.







10. Create your own commands.

Most of the users use some applications frequently. A way of starting them quickly is to create them a Run command for each of them. Here is how:

a. Use the Win+R key combination to start Run.

b. Type in %windir% to open Windows folder.

c. Press Alt+F to access the File menu. Select NewShortcut.

d. Use the screen instructions to get it right. The name that you will put it into will be used into the Run dialog box for launching.
